James Douglas Hillhouse III, long-time Birmingham resident, architect and avid fly-fisherman, passed away Tuesday June 23rd at the age of 85, due to cancer. He graduated from Marion Military institute in 1947, and continued his studies at Auburn University before volunteering for service with the U.S. Army in post-war Germany. He often talked about the men he served in the 432 Engineering Construction Battalion. After his service, he finished his degree in Architecture at Auburn and began his career in Birmingham. In the late 1950's, he moved to Midland, Texas to open a custom residential practice, where he met the former Sara Maverick, whom he married in 1962. In 1967 he returned to Birmingham. During a long tenure at UAB, he was especially proud of his work on the expansion of the UAB campus on 13th Street, which was opened by then Governor George Wallace. In 1979, he returned to private practice, during which he designed several noteworthy private residences in the Birmingham area. He shall be missed by numerous family members and friends, who all remember his quick wit, optimistic outlook, and wry sense of humor. He is survived by his three children from the marriage, James D. Hillhouse IV of Austin, Texas, Phillip M. Hillhouse of Los Angeles, California, George S. Hillhouse of Austin, Texas and his two grandchildren, Samuel Maverick Hillhouse and Henry Faulk Hillhouse of Austin, Texas.
