

Jane Major Whitaker, 97, a lifelong resident of Birmingham, was born February 1, 1927 and died November 1, 2024. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Lee Major and Rosa Wilson Major, and her husband of 64 years, Vernon Edelen Whitaker. She is survived by her children Dr. Willian Vernon Whitaker (Ginny), Pamela Whitaker Ball (Leonard, deceased), and Daniel Edelen Whitaker (Lory, deceased); and her grandchildren William Bennet Whitaker (Elizabeth), David Wilson Whitaker (Natalie), Robert Hollingsworth Whitaker, Shannon E. Waller, III (Jackie), Sarah Anne Sawyer, Daniel Taylor Whitaker (Maggie), Andrew Tucker Whitaker (Ivana), and Mallory Evelyn Whitaker, and 12 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Whitaker attended Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland and received her secondary teacher’s certificate from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. She taught math and science at Brook Hill School (Altamont). She was a member of Altadena Valley Presbyterian Church (PCA). She loved spending time outdoors, enjoying hiking, birdwatching, and planting wild flowers and ferns. But most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will miss their “Gran” dearly. Graveside services will be at Oak Hill Cemetery on Saturday, November 9 at 1:30 p.m., Pastor Blake Harris officiating. She knows her Redeemer lives!
