

Birmingham, Al. She was a native of Oxford, Alabama, where she attended Oxford High School.
She also attended The University of Alabama. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma
Sorority, and she remained active with the Birmingham alumni chapter for years. In 1952 she
began a forty-one-year career at The University of Alabama in Birmingham, serving first as
Assistant to Dr. Joseph F. Volker as he led the development of UAB from its infancy, and also
during his tenure as Chancellor of the University of Alabama System. She then served as
Assistant to Dr. Charles A. McCallum during his time as President of UAB. Jane retired from
UAB in 1993. She remained an active supporter of UAB during her retirement years, and she
was particularly active in UAB retiree organizations. She was also an avid supporter of UAB
athletics, never missing a home basketball game as long as she was able to go.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Mark Johnson Williams and Effie Mae Fulton
Williams. Also preceding her in death were her brothers, Mark J. Williams, Jr., James W.
Williams, Genubath Coke Williams and sister Jody Williams Jones.
Jane is survived by her sisters, Louise Williams Lokey (Anniston, Al. and Sewanee, Tn.), Mary
Williams Tartt (Livingston, Al.) and brother-in-law Rev. Richard Jones (Alexandria, Va.) as well
as fourteen nieces and nephews.
Friends are cordially invited to the Graveside Service commencing at two o'clock in the afternoon on Sunday, the 6th of March 2022 at Oxford Memorial Gardens in Oxford, Alabama. The family requests with gratitude that any memorial gifts in Jane's name be made to the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Services are under the direction of Ridout's Valley Chapel (205-879-3401) in Homewood.
