Born in 1934 to Hosea M. and Essie Taylor in Eupora, MS. Jewell graduated from Aliceville High School in 1953 where she served as the cheerleading captain her senior year. She went on to attend Mississippi State College for Women before moving on to be head secretary to the CEO of Kraft Foods and then the CEO of Marathon Oil Company. She later retired after 35 years with South Central Bell. She also spent her time offering her services as an ASL interpreter and teacher at the local church.
She is remembered by her family as Meme, a loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed playing piano, shopping, and spoiling her grandchildren, often telling each one she loved them the “mostest, bestest”. Her love of fashion was evident in her many closets filled with clothes and shoes to envy. She was married to her husband, Billy Cassell, for 52 years, spending much of their time together traveling from adventure to adventure around the world.
Jewell is survived by her siblings, Sena Buxton and John Gene Taylor, her children, Douglas Mark Pritchett(Nell) and Deborah Jo Booth (Derrill), 5 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. She is preceded in death by her husband, Billy Jack Cassell, and 8 siblings.
Jewell will be laid to rest with her husband at the Alabama National Cemetery on December 30th at 2:00 pm. Rev. David Kelley officiating the service.
Jewell “Meme” Cassell will be missed greatly by all those who had the privilege to know her.
