Jo Batchelor Dickinson, age 85 of Homewood, Alabama, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 29, 2023. She was born on March 26, 1938, the daughter of the late Leonard and Gwen Batchelor of Haleyville, Alabama.
She was a member of Hope Community Church in Gardendale for over 60 years. Mrs. Dickinson was a talented seamstress who designed and made costumes for the Krewe Ball, Children’s Theatre, The Alabama Ballet, and Town & Gown Theatre. Working with Homewood’s first Drum Major, her vision for a new uniform came to life. She then designed and created the first Homewood Patriot’s Drum Major’s uniform as well as created many wedding and bridesmaid’s gowns, cheerleader uniforms, and flag girl uniforms.
Jo always felt honored and so much enjoyed involvement at her church, making costumes for the Christmas programs, acolyte robes, flags for special recognition services and so much more. Her happiest times were spent serving others in any way she was led. She also found special joy spending time with neighborhood children who lived on her street. She always looked for and found ways to enhance the children’s learning about nature and foremost, about God.
Mrs. Dickinson was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Dickinson of Homewood; sisters, Peggy Hulsey of Cullman and Lynn Medas of Palm Coast, Florida. She is survived by her daughters, Vickie Massengill and Jan Dickinson; son in law, Ken Massengill; and numerous other family members.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Dickinson will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, the 5th of October, at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood, Alabama. Friends are cordially invited to visit with the family one hour prior to the service. Graveside services will then be held at 2:00 p.m. at Winston Memorial Gardens in Haleyville, Alabama.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests with gratitude that memorials honoring the life of Mrs. Dickinson be directed to the Organ Fund at Hope Community Church in Gardendale, Alabama.
Services are under the direction of Ridout’s Valley Chapel (205-879-3401) in Homewood, Alabama.
