

Joyce Harlin Atkinson died unexpectedly at her home on December 2, 2017 in Hoover, Alabama at the age of 62. Ms. Atkinson was born on August 24, 1955 in Ogden, Utah to Lieutenant Colonel and Mrs. Edgar F. Harlin, Jr. She grew up traveling around the world with her family. She married Jack Douglas Atkinson, her college sweetheart July 10, 1976. After moving to Birmingham, Joyce began working for UAB and held many positions including program administrator. In 2002, She graduated from UAB with a master’s degree in Public Administration. Ms. Atkinson was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She will be remembered for her kindness and generosity. Ms. Atkinson had a passion for genealogy and antiques. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Ms. Atkinson is survived by her beloved sons, Christopher Atkinson (Jessica) and Stephen Atkinson; their father Jack Douglas Atkinson; three grandchildren Jack, Samuel and Rachel Atkinson, all of Homewood, Alabama; Her mother Kathryn Harlin of Jacksonville, FL; her siblings Julia Tillou (Kenneth) of Salt Lake City, UT, Elizabeth Wheat (Richard) of Liverpool, TX, and Edgar F. Harlin, III (Cindy) of Jacksonville, FL; as well as a multitude of beloved nieces, nephews, aunts, uncle and cousins. She is preceded in death by her father, Lieutenant Colonel Edgar F. Harlin, Jr., USAF, Retired of Mobile, Alabama.
A funeral is scheduled for Saturday, December 9, 2017 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Moaut Chapel. The family will receive guests at 10:30am and services will follow at 11:30am. A graveside service will immediately follow at Elmwood Cemetery. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Ms. Atkinson’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
