Mary Russell Walter Haynes passed away peacefully on January 12, 2025, in Birmingham, Alabama, at the age of 85. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clement Sweatman Walter Jr. and Elizabeth Davie Walter.
She is survived by her longtime companion, Rod Camp; her daughters, Karen Elizabeth Lankford (Carol Lockyear), Heather Lankford Waterman (Tony), and Molly Lankford Allen (Roger); her sisters, Jean Walter Reed (Bill) and Susan Walter Stockham; and her grandchildren, Morgan Waterman (Bremen), Noah Waterman, Bailey Allen, and Will Allen.
Mary graduated from Brooke Hill School and Birmingham-Southern College, where she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. As a young woman, she excelled as an equestrian, earning numerous awards for her horsemanship. An avid and prolific reader, she also enjoyed playing tennis and gardening but found her greatest passion in bridge. Her dedication to the game led her to achieve the esteemed rank of Life Master bridge player.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Hands of an Angel Nursing for their compassionate care during Mary’s final days.
A private graveside service for family will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests with gratitude that donations may be made in Mary’s memory to The Greater Birmingham Humane Society or Better Basics, an organization dedicated to advancing children’s literacy in Alabama.
