She is survived by her husband of 54 years, James Albert Young, her daughter, Mary Alice Young (John), son, John David Young (Erica), granddaughter, Elizabeth Virginia Gamble (Jessie), and great grandson, Colton Blake Gamble. She is preceded in death by her father, Charles Edward Shaffer Sr., mother, Mary Alice “Ted” Colgan Shaffer, brothers, Charles Edward Shaffer Jr. (Evelyn), William Colgan Shaffer Sr. (Patricia), and James Grant Shaffer Sr.
Mary Catherine had a passionate love for Christ, she enjoyed singing in the choir, and volunteering with the library and church office at her Parish, Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church and School, where she was a member for 47 years.
Her visitation will be held on Friday, August 1st, of 2025 from 10:00 A.M. - 11:00 A.M. at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church. A mass will be held at 11:00 A.M. following her visitation. She will be laid to rest at Forest Crest Cemetery in Birmingham, Alabama.
