Nell Sugg Metz

Nell Sugg Metz was born in Ozark, Dale County, Alabama, March 26, 1929, died May 14, 2019. Early years were in Goodwater, Alabama. However, she lived in Birmingham for 70 years. Mrs. Metz graduated from Montreat College High School, Montreat, N.C. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology and Physical Education in 1970 from the University of Montevallo and a Master’s Degree in Education, Guidance & Counseling from Samford University in 1974. She was Program and Executive Director for Girls and Women’s Programs, Ludlow Community Center, Ledlow, Massachusetts and Girls Club, Inc. of Birmingham, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip Samuel Sugg, Sr. and Ethel Jernigen Sugg, husband Wilbur Hinkle Metz, bother Phillip Samuel Sugg, Jr. and stepson, Lt. Col. Stephen Cole Metz. Mrs. Metz was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. She was also a member The Club, DAR (Old Elyton Branch), Master Gardener's of Jefferson County and Brookhill Forest Garden Cub along with volunteering for numerous civic organizations.

Nell played such an integral role in our family. She opened her home to two of my children when they needed a place to live. She was there for births, weddings, and funerals. Years ago, she was a great coworker at Hanna's Garden Shop. She was a loving companion for Beaty. She was such a caring individual with such a big heart. Nell, thank you for the influence you had in our lives. You will be missed.
