

Phyllis W. Sherk, 88, of Homewood passed away August 15 2015. She was born to E.O. and Ruby Williams in Deland, Florida on October 2, 1926. At the age of 20, Phyllis married the love of her life, Maurice D. Sherk. Their four children were born in Jacksonville, Florida and the family transferred to Birmingham in 1956. Phyllis was a stay-at-home mom while her children were in grade school but rejoined the workforce as a bookkeeper at Luckie and Forney Company until her retirement. When her children were young, she was a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader, shepherded her children to numerous athletic activities while supporting their educations endeavors. Her interest included playing spirited games with her Bridge Club, knitting award-winning pieces with her Knitting Guild, participating with the Alabama Wildflower Society, volunteering at St Vincent’s Hospital and at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School.
Phyllis is preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Maurice D. Sherk, and their two sons, Thomas H. Sherk and James E. Sherk. She is survived by her two daughters, Linda G. Sherk, and Major General (Retired) N. Lee S. Price, her two daughter-in-laws, Cathy Sherk and Connie Sherk, her three grandsons, Jason B. Sherk, Matthew D. Sherk (Shelley), Jonathan D. Sherk (Mindy), and her great-grandchildren, Maggie, Vivian, Lisa, and Vance Sherk. Visitation for Phyllis will be Wednesday, August 19th from 10:00 – 11:00 at Ridout’s Valley Chapel, services at 11:00 and followed by a reception at Valley Chapel. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America or your favorite charity.
