Polly Hutto Westberg LeVert went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday Feb 26, 2025. She was 73 years old. She is survived by: Her loving husband Bill LeVert, son Leif Westberg and his wife Arnela, brother William (Bubba) Hutto, five grandchildren, three cousins, two nephews, a niece and many close friends.
Polly Pembrook Hutto was born to Fay Maples Hutto and Dr William Baxter Hutto in New Orleans LA, on Oct 1st, 1951. She was energetic, a horse girl as a child, who progressed to trainer by the time she was a teenager. She won several blue ribbons with her best work, a colt nobody could handle, Mr. Untouchable.
Polly was an active member of the Delta Alpha Delta sorority and the art club at Berry High School. She won several art awards in high school and did a show of her work in a mother daughter show, when she was 14. Her mother was an accomplished art teacher.
After marriage and giving birth to her son, Leif Westberg, she went back to school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), achieving a Bachelor of Arts degree in art education. She worked diligently in art education for Jefferson County AL. She taught at Gardendale and Leeds High Schools. Her career spanned more than 20 years of service, during which time she shaped and inspired many young artists. Polly retired from Jefferson County and took an art teaching position at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School in Homewood, AL. It was during this time that she moonlighted a master’s degree in art education at UAB. She retired completely in 2019, after the death of her mother.
In their retirement, she and her husband Bill enjoyed many long vacations in Florida, Mississippi and Alabama with their loveable dog Syxx. Polly began having serious health problems a few years ago. She fought poor health with an adamant, never-say-die composer all the way to the end, when pneumonia finally sent her back home to Jesus.
“Polly, we know you can hear us from way up yonder. We will always love and remember you, Girl.”
Polly was cremated. With a short pause, due to a very long and stressful final hospital stay, a memorial date will be announced soon. The family would like to give thanks and gratitude to Mrs. Penny, a neighbor, and Mrs. Carolyn Green, a long-time family friend. They were both great help with the caretaking and deeply appreciated. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to BAA (Birmingham Art Association). Polly was an active member for many years.
