Ralph Anthony Mark, Jr., known to most as “Dadaw” was born in Birmingham, Alabama November 19, 1929 and passed on to be with our heavenly Father on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 7:42pm where he made his first of many casts from heaven’s pearly gates. Ralph was a graduate of Shades Cahaba High School in Homewood and after graduation enlisted in the Army where he proudly served four years during the Korean War. He then went on to earn a degree in Art from Auburn University and carried out his passion for 18 years as the Illustrator for Southern Living Magazine. Southern Living was not just a job and career to Ralph, but more like a second family. He loved the company and people, as well as the 25 years he actively participated on their company co-ed softball team. After retiring from Southern Living, Ralph contributed artwork to Progressive Farmer Magazine for almost two decades.
He is preceded in death by his parents Ralph Anthony and Irma Mark, and his wife, Anna Mark, all of Birmingham. He is survived by his son, Ralph Anthony (Chip) Mark, III of Birmingham, daughter, Tracie Mark Smith of Birmingham, and daughter, Monica Luster of Birmingham. Also left to carry on his memory are his grandchildren; Amanda Mark, Stephanie Mark and Abbey Mark all of Birmingham, Hannah E. Wood of Indianapolis, IN, Steve H. Wood, Jr. of Birmingham, and Allie Luster of Birmingham.
Ralph was a devoted father and best friend to many. He was an avid fisherman and spent many weekends on the lakes of Alabama and Florida. Ralph was also a huge supporter of his grandchildren’s extracurricular activities and when he wasn’t with them, you could find him walking with friends at the Riverchase Galleria.
The family will receive friends on Monday, October 5, 2020 at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am with a service to follow at 11:00 am.
