Robert G. Dawson, Jr. - aka Bobby, Dad, Pop, Papa, 94, of Homewood, cashed in his special invitation to the Carter Family reunion concert (ask a family member) on Wednesday, March 25th, 2026. He was with family when last he breathed, enjoying a peaceful, painless transition.
After brief stints in the Army Reserve and Auburn University (very brief), Bobby joined his dad in the family business, Dawson Brothers Cycle Co. There, he turned screws and sharpened blades for over 45 years, not to mention swilling thousands of gallons of coffee at the Anchorage Restaurant with friends and vendors.
Bobby spent decades of Thursday nights at Shades Valley Lodge #829 where he always looked forward to fellowship with other Masons. He became a 33rd degree Master Mason and once served as Worshipful Master of 829.
When the shop closed in 2000, Bobby settled-in to a richly deserved break from his oily, smoke-filled work basement and assumed the responsibilities of full retirement with his loving wife of over 60 years, Margaret Schmitt Dawson - aka Maggie, Mom, Granny. During their quarter century of taking it easy, time was shared with family and church, books and music.
Bobby’s legacy includes duty, friendship, listening, and laughter. He always had or made time for anyone desirous of a favor, a chat, or a few minutes of his company, especially if the promise of a cigar somehow figured in to the occasion.
He is predeceased by his parents, Robert G. Dawson, Sr. and Ora Graham Dawson; his wife of 64 years, Margaret Schmitt Dawson; and great grandson, James Garrett Lange.
Survivors include son, Rob Dawson and his wife Lynda; daughter, Anne Dawson; daughter Barbara Dawson and her partner Alesia Adams; daughter, Lea Dawson Lorino and her husband, Michael.
Bobby enjoyed the love and shenanigans of 6 grandchildren: Aaron Overton and his wife, Chidimma Osigwe Overton; Graham Overton; Graham Dawson; Sara Garrett and her partner, Josh Lange; Sam Lorino and his wife, Stephanie Ardovino Lorino; Laura Beth Garrett; and Elena Lorino; and 2 great grandchildren, Kori and Keller Lange. And while not related by blood or marriage, Bobby leaves behind the best dance partner a guy could ask for, his beloved neighbor, June Blackwell.
The family will have a private graveside service. To remember or honor him, crack open a cold Budweiser, or smoke a cigar, or eat a peanut butter sandwich. Or, make a donation to Shriners Children’s Hospital.
