Samuel Eugene Stewart, Jr. of Birmingham, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 27, 2025. He was the first of the baby boomer generation, born on January 1, 1946. He was raised in Decatur, AL by parents Mary Ann Smith Stewart and Samuel Eugene Stewart.
The consummate sales professional, Sam spent the better part of sixty years in the automotive business. He got his start at Jim Burke Buick, and over the years made a name for himself building relationships with customers at Foreign Car City, German Auto, and Crown Automotive. Eventually he returned to where it all began – Jim Burke Automotive – where he could never hide his fondness for Subaru.
Sam’s passions included motorcycles, fine food and wine, fashion, bull terriers, entertaining friends at home, and bragging about his daughters and grandchildren. He will be remembered for his kindness, warmth, soft-spoken friendly nature, and his great sense of humor.
Sam was predeceased by his father and is survived by his wife of 50 years Sandra Gunter Stewart; his daughters Krislin Stewart Smith (Henley), Elise Smitherman (Tracy); his mother; his grandchildren Carter Weis, Trent Weis, Paley Smith Anderson (Gage), and Lucy Smith; and his brother Robert Lynn Stewart (Jennifer).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Sam Stewart be made to Trinity Outreach Hub Ministry, 1400 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL 35209.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2025 beginning at three o’clock in the afternoon at Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church, 3736 Montrose Road, Mountain Brook, AL 35213. The family will receive friends following the service.
