2018. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama June 22, 1921. He was the son of Alex
Chris Kontos and Stella Karamichas Kontos of Geraki, Greece.
He is preceded in death by his wife Annette Vlahos Kontos and son Chris
Steven Kontos.
He is survived by his children Alex Kontos and wife Marty, Stella Grenier,
George Kontos and wife Kristine, Steven Kontos Jr. and wife Ann, Elene’ Baker and
husband Kenny, Anne Clancy and husband Sean.
He is survived by his grandchildren Eric Kontos and wife Erin, Anna Thuston
and husband Walker, Nicolas Kontos, Steven A. Kontos III (Steedy) and wife Jenny,
Katherine Baker, Lee Baker, George Kontos Jr., Stella Christine Kontos, Alex G.
Kontos and Miles Clancy.
He is also survived by his seven great grandchildren.
He graduated from Phillips High School. He served in the United States Air
Force during World War II and was stationed in Boise, Idaho. It was a place he never
forgot and commonly referred to as “God’s Country.”
Steve was a standout basketball player at Phillips. He also played on military
teams during the War and traveled from base-to-base entertaining troops. Upon
returning to Birmingham, he joined the family business, Alex Kontos Fruit Company.
Under Steve’s competitive leadership, his family grew the business until his
retirement in 2001.
Steve enjoyed many passions in life, especially holding court with friends and
family at his corner table at Birmingham’s best. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed a
friendly wager on any sporting event. Later in life, he was fondly referred to as the
“Guru” because of his sage advice and knowledge on all matters. As he liked to say,
“Love and finance are my specialties, but I can help you with anything.”
His family is especially grateful to longtime friends Billie Jean Ransom and
Darryl Redwine. Special thanks to our team of wonderful caregivers.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Holy Trinity Holy Cross
Greek Orthodox Cathedral. All donations will be dedicated to the new chapel in
Harpersville, Alabama.
The visitation is Wednesday, July 11, beginning at 5:00 p.m., followed by the
Trisagion service at 7:00 p.m.
The funeral is Thursday, July 12 at 11:00 a.m.
All services will be held at Holy Trinity Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral
at 307 19th Street South, Birmingham, Alabama 35233.
