

Sue Aldridge Newton, age 93, passed away on September 11, 2023. Sue was born on September 10, 1930, in Birmingham, Alabama, and was a life-long resident of Birmingham. She was raised in Forest Park in Birmingham and graduated from Ramsay High School in 1948. She attended Hollins College and graduated from the University of Alabama in 1952 where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. Sue was active in the community through many organizations such as The Junior League of Birmingham, Harlequins, Tremont Garden Club, Argus Club, the Guild of the Birmingham Music Club, The Symphony Volunteer Council, The Country Club of Birmingham, Shoal Creek Club, Garden of the Gods (Colorado Springs), University Club (New York). Sue was a faithful life-long member of Independent Presbyterian Church.
Sue was predeceased by her husband, Alex W. Newton, her parents Lamar and Sue Aldridge, son Lamar Aldridge Newton and great grandson Hayes Aldridge Collins. She is survived by her sisters Jane Montgomery (Denver, CO), Betty Mason (Frank), daughters Kelly Newton Hammond (Clark), Jane Worthy Newton, son Robins Jeffry Newton, M.D. (DeeDee), daughter in law Martha Faricy Newton. Surviving grandchildren are Kathryn N. Glover (Henry), Alex W. Newton, II, (Jesse), Margaret H. Manuel (Carter), Albert N. Hammond, Kilby N. Hammond (Caitlin), Charles A. Newton, Sydney M. Newton, 7 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Sue was adored by her family and cherished by many close friends. Sue had a strong personal faith in God, which she expressed in how she loved her family, friends, her church, and community at large. She was the epitome of grace, patience and resilience of no comparison. Sue and Alex both had the gift of generosity and gave so others had the opportunity to learn and achieve. Wilcox County always had a special place in Sue’s heart as she and her sisters spent summers visiting where her father grew up in Catherine, AL. Sue loved music and travelling with family and friends. She had been to every continent except Antarctica.

A memorial service will be held Friday, September 22, 11:00 a.m. at Independent Presbyterian Church, 3100 Highland Avenue. There will be visitation immediately following the memorial service.
