Vonceil Foster Coleman (known by many of her friends as Vonnie), died on July 9, 2012 in the presence of her family. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, John J. Coleman, Jr., and sons (and daughters-in-law) John (Lizabeth), Key (Katharine), Daniel (Brooke) and Carey (Nicole). She is also survived by grandchildren, Caroline Easow (husband Amit) and Jack, Isabel, William and Temple Coleman, brother A. Key Foster, Jr. (Jean), and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Vonnie was born August 7, 1930 to Arthur Key Foster, Sr. and Vonceil Oden Foster. She was graduated from the University of Alabama, where she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority, was awarded the Algernon Sydney Sullivan award, and where she acquired a lifelong love of the French language and culture. She earned Master’s degrees in French from Middlebury College and from the University of Alabama, made many trips to France and often hosted French exchange students and study groups in her home. She was an active member in the Alliance Francaise in Birmingham and was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames in Alabama, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Junior League of Birmingham and the Linley Heflin Unit.
Vonnie’s life-work, however, was her family. She was first and foremost, a cherished wife to her husband, a devoted mother and Christian example to her four boys, and a compassionate friend to many on both sides of the Atlantic. She was active in her church her entire life and attended Community Bible Study.
She will be deeply missed by all those who knew her.
On Thursday July 12, a visitation will be held at 10 AM in the parlor at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 65 Old Montgomery Highway, followed by the memorial service at 11 AM in the sanctuary.
The family has asked in lieu of flowers that donations be made to UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center (www.uab.edu), Community Bible Study, or the charity of your choice..
