William Gerald "Jerry" Beard

The family of William Gerald Beard (Jerry) is deeply saddened to announce his passing on August 5, 2024 at the age of 82. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kay Jones Beard; children, Shae (Billy) Reed and Brad (Jill) Beard; siblings, Danny Lee Beard (Stella) and Stella Ruth Holmes (Lewis). Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, William Alonso Beard and Stella Ruth Johnson; daughter Ashley Beard Ellsworth; and siblings Charles Eugene Beard (Shannon) and Thomas Ellerbee.

Jerry was born in Tuscaloosa, AL on March 21, 1942. Growing up in Tuscaloosa, Jerry excelled in baseball and football. He had the privilege of playing football at the University of Alabama for a year under Coach Bear Bryant. While at Alabama, Jerry earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.

Jerry served in the United States Army from 1965 – 1971. Like his father, he was an Army medic, earning the rank of Specialist 5.

Family was Jerry’s greatest source of joy in his life. On August 10, 1968, he married the love of his life, Kay. Together they raised three children and experienced the joy of being grandparents and great-grandparents. Jerry especially enjoyed watching his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events and spending time with his loved ones during family gatherings.

Jerry had a close relationship with the Lord and enjoyed worshipping Him at Hunter Street Baptist Church, where he attended regularly until his hearing began to decline. Afterward, he worshipped online each Sunday.

Jerry will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

A memorial service officiated by Pastor Buddy Gray will be held on Monday, August 12, 2024 at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood. Visitation will begin at 2:00, followed by a memorial service at 2:30.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Services are under the direction of Ridout's Valley Chapel (205-879-3401) in Homewood.
