William Carter Burgess (Billy), 59, of Homewood, Alabama, passed away August 9th, 2022, embraced by family. Born August 22nd, 1962, Billy was the youngest of five children, who all adored their ‘baby’ brother. He graduated from Mountain Brook High School in 1980. He went on to attend Auburn University where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He ultimately transferred and graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a degree in political science. He began working at Rives Construction Company in 1985 where he cultivated some of his greatest, most treasured friendships with his colleagues. He continued to work at Rives as a project manager for 37 years. He was known for his strong work ethic and unmatched attention to detail. He met the love of his life, Marsha, at the Flora-Bama in 1986. He knew she was the one and proposed two months later. The pair married shortly after in August of 1987. Together, they raised three girls and three funny pups who all idolized Billy. He begrudgingly helped parent several feral cats along the way. He will be remembered for his quirkiness and his uncanny ability to fumble common cliches. He was an impressive history buff and an expert of many (often random) topics. He purchased his first Saab at the age of 16 and was a lifelong owner and enthusiast. He enjoyed passionately discussing politics, sports, and his disdain for shoddy roadway infrastructures. He had many unconventional hobbies and passions - washing the family vehicles each Saturday, shopping around for vintage boats online, and diligently organizing his checkbook. He delighted in creating complexity in the mundane. If you needed to find Billy on almost any given afternoon, you didn’t need to look any further than his front yard where he worked tirelessly on perfecting grass length and shrubs in his oversized Carhartt t-shirts and Wrangler jeans. He found bliss in enjoying a cold Corona with lime at Mexico Lindo a few nights each week. After all, he was a creature of habit. He took meticulous care of anything and everything that crossed his path. With this same meticulousness, he cared for his family and friends. He was brave and resilient until the very end. He is survived by his wife, Marsha (Andrews) Burgess; his daughter Amanda Britton, husband Jason Britton; his daughter Hannah Burgess, fiancé Davis Platt; his daughter Bailey Burgess; and his grandson Jason Gabriel Britton II. He is also survived by his siblings, Peggy (Harold) Burdette, Pat (Andy) Kilpatrick, and Arthur E. Burgess, Jr. He is preceded in death by his parents, Faye and A.E. Burgess, and his sister, Nancy Burgess. He will be missed by his many nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, and colleagues.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Billy’s life at All Saint’s Episcopal Church in Homewood, Alabama on Monday, August 15th, 2022 at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to bethematchfoundation.org.
