

CDR David Warren Pooley, USN (RET), 87, of Homosassa, FL, passed away on Sat., July 29, 2023 at Tampa General Hospital, Tampa, FL. A native of Passaic, NJ, David was born May 30, 1936 to Robert and Margaret (Angermann), Pooley, one of two children. David was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. CDR. Pooley served his country honorably and proudly in the United States Navy as a commissioned officer for over 20 years and CDR Pooley also served the Navy as a recruiter. Mr. Pooley earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Rutgers University in New Jersey, where he played football, and also held a Master’s Degree in Arts from Montclair State College in New Jersey. Upon his retirement, he began a 25 year career as the Athletic Director at West Morris Central High School School in Chester, New Jersey. David was an avid sport fan of college football, tennis and lacrosse; a sport he especially excelled in during his life. He also officiated boys lacrosse and was a recipient of NFiOA Outstanding Service Award in 1989 in the State of New Jersey, and election to the New Jersey Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1997. The New Jersey Pooley Division Lacrosse Player of the Year Award still continues today in his name. David moved to Sugarmill Woods in Homosassa in 1987 with his beloved wife of 63 years, Mabel, and they have both been recent residents of Sunflower Springs Assisted Living in Homosassa. David and Mable loved to travel and had been all over the world, especially to their summer cottage in Waterford, CT. CDR Pooley’s perfect day would be Saturday watching college football. He also belonged to the Homosassa Tennis Club and was an avid bridge player. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Pooley. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Mabel C. Pooley of Homosassa; his children Cyndee Pooley (Christopher Edmonds), Manakin Sabot, VA; Lynelle Pooley Santosuosso (Richard), Middleton, MA and Robert Pooley (Kristin Book), Bangor, PA; grandchildren Karlene Santsuosso of Middletown, MA; Richard Aaron Santosuosso (Jasmin Serrano Santosuosso), Gloucester, MA; Jessica Pooley, Kresgeville, PA and Ryan Pooley, Rochester, NY and a nephew, Russell Pooley (Lisa), Rochester, NY. Friends will be received on Thurs., Aug. 3, 2023 from 11:00 AM until 12:30 P.M. at Wilder Funeral Home, Homosassa.
