BHATTACHARYYA, NANA MEGHANATH, 89, of Honolulu, born in India, passed away on July 9, 2011 at Queen’s Medical Center. Nana was a Freedom Fighter in his home state of Assam during Gandhi’s nonviolent struggle for India’s independence. In the mid 1940s he joined Gandhi’s ashram in Sevagram and worked for educational and social reform in Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave’s Sarvodaya movement. After earning an M.A. in Education from University Oregon and M.A. in Public Health from UC Berkeley, he and his family returned to India where he taught heath education and preventive medicine at the Kasturba Medical School. In the early 1970s, he and his family moved to Southern California, where he and his wife remained until 2004 when they moved to Hawaii.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis; his son Eesha; and his daughter Swasti Bhattacharyya and 3 grandchildren.
Service Information: A Memorial Service will be conducted at 72 Dowsett Avenue, Honolulu on Wednesday, July 20 at 4:00 p.m.
