Nelly was born on April 19, 1941 in Camarines Norte, Philippines and peacefully went home with the Lord on April 22, 2025 at the age of 84 years old. She arrived from Manila Philippines in January, 1994 through her husband’s petition.
Nelly Abad Matibag was a devoted wife of Avelino Cometa Matibag (95) for 65 years, the second youngest of 8 siblings, and a cherished mother to 5 children- Norayda, Victor, Marilou, Baltazar, and Clarence. She was also a beloved grandmother to her 19 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
During her early years, Nelly worked as a businessperson and became affiliated with Avon Cosmetics in the Philippines and worked her way to have her own small grocery store in Manila. In Hawaii, she worked at Sizzler’s restaurant in Waipahu, Del Monte, and retired in ABM services. Although she did not have the opportunity to pursue a higher education, she believed that success can be achieved through hard-work, as evidenced by her strong work ethic.
Everyone that knew “Nanay” Nelly remembers that her passion for cooking her signature dish, “Laing” (dried taro leaves cooked in coconut milk) and “Bicol Express” was her way of bringing happiness to others.
Nelly effortlessly brightened any room with her jokes and laughter. She had a vibrant and happy spirit that brought joy to her family, especially her grandchildren, whether it was attending their performances or cheering them from afar during events. Nelly was always present, offering her unwavering encouragement and love.
Nanay’s faith spoke volumes, even in the face of life’s adversities. Her favorite chapter, Psalm 23, was a nightly devotion she embraced; she would read its verses aloud, allowing God’s words to envelop her with comfort and strength. The passage provided her with peace and courage, enabling her to persevere through life’s challenges. Her relationship with God became a guiding force that pushed her until the end.
