He was a superb pilot (having flown fighter jets in the Air Force) and enjoyed doing aerobatics in the World War I replica of a Starduster Too, (which he built over many years) over Dillingham Airfield on the North shore of Oahu. He was one of just a few pilots in Hawaii still flying after the age of 80 and was a member of the UFOs (United Flying Octogenarians).
On November 3rd 2009 he received the Wright Brothers “Master Pilot” award and on the 26th of February 2010, he had the honor of receiving the FAA award for the Charles Taylor “Master Mechanic” of the year for practicing and promoting safe aircraft maintenance for 50 consecutive years.
Inurnment will be held on June 9, 2016 at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at 3:00pm. Mr. Schauer’s ashes will be scattered off of Kaena Point, Oahu by the Quiet Birdman.
