

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Herring, Sr. and Ora Davis Herring; her husband, Dillard Lee Whitman, Sr.; her brothers, Walter Herring, Jr. and Melvin Herring; and her sister, Janice Howard. She is survived by her three children and their families: Son, Sonny Whitman and wife, Sandra of Lexington, SC; granddaughter, Shelly Waldo, and husband, Clay Waldo, and son, Chandler Waldo, of Elkton, KY; grandson, Jef and wife Dianne; great-grandchildren, Cameron, Makenzye, Chanden, and Cason, all of Chapin, SC; daughter, Betty Waldo and husband, Charles Waldo; granddaughter, Alana Daughtry, of Claxton, GA; granddaughter, Dana Daughtry; great-granddaughters, Jordan Irving and Taylor Irving of Walterboro, SC; son, Gary Whitman and wife, Angela; grandson, Bradley Whitman; and granddaughter, Kelly Whitman, of Fayetteville, NC.
She is also survived by her brother, Alfred Herring and wife, Virginia, of Clinton, NC; sister-in-law, Wilma Herring, of Warsaw, NC; two sisters, Olive Matthis, of Warsaw, NC, and Stella Kyzer, of Columbia, SC. She also has many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Whitman retired from Cape Fear Valley Medical Center as a receptionist. She has volunteered there for 19 years after her retirement. She was involved in the WMU of her Church for more than 50 years, holding many offices. She held several other offices in her church. She has served as her Daddy’s Family Historian for many years.
Her hobbies have been growing roses and she shared those with many people. She liked to write short stories, prose, and poetry. Several things have been published. She loved and enjoyed most of all, her large and loving family.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon, Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Lafayette Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Branch officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 12 noon prior to the service.
A private committal service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Calypso Cemetery in Calypso, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Keenagers of Lafayette Baptist Church, 501 Hope Mills Road, Fayetteville, NC 28304.
