James Edward Joyner, 61, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, fought and won the courageous battle against cancer. On June 1, 2022, James received his glorious crown as he stepped into the arms of Jesus.
James was born and raised in Prince George County, Maryland. He was a 1980 graduate of Anacostia High School.
James always swore he could never be with a woman who was from or even lived in California. That all changed when he met the love of his life Sherrill Gilliard. He came to love California and didn’t want to leave. While in California, he served as a Deacon of Mount Zion Church of God In Christ located in Rancho Cordova, California. He was also on a bowling league there called Hi/Lo Scratch.
James enjoyed doing DIY projects and making center pieces for weddings. His dream was to open a wedding venue. He loved watching football, especially the formally known Redskins who are now known as The Commanders, watching NCIS, and skating. James was also very passionate about bowling. He was a member of two bowling leagues in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Just Us at B&B Bowling Center and Town Clowns at Lafayette Bowling Center. James was also a “Stepper” and tried his best to teach Sherrill how to step. Sherrill didn’t have any rhythm, but he kept on trying. James loved to cook his famous ribs and BBQ chicken, and Sherrill was always happy to have those ribs and chicken. They were delicious, but it also meant Sherrill didn’t have to cook dinner that night. James worked at Womack Army Medical Center as a Certified Nursing Assistant on Fort Bragg, North Carolina and was very loved by the staff. Before his career at Womack, he was employed at Kaiser Permanente in Maryland.
James is preceded in death by his parents Willie James Joyner and Barbara Ann Tasker.
He is survived by the love of his life Sherrill Joyner of 6 years. His stepchildren, Christina Harvey and her husband, Diedra Singleton, Michael Foote, Robert Scott Jr., and Freddie Singleton; his grandchildren, Destiny Harvey, Aurielle Harvey, and Zamire Foote; his siblings, Wilbert Joyner and his wife, Michael Joyner and his wife, LaWanda Harris, and Nicole Jackson; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and other family members. James was "adopted" by Pastor Robert J. Reynolds Jr. and his latewife Geneva Reynolds.
James will forever be remembered for his zest for life, personality, humor, dedication, and loyalty.
The family would like to thank Health Pavilion North Cancer Center with Cape Fear, UNC in Chapel Hill, Duke Cancer Center and Staff, Nicole Henderson and her husband Justin, and Reeves Funeral and Staff, Black Kingz MC and S.B.K (their adopted children), Melvin Pierce (their adopted son), Dietrick Ramey and Coworkers at Womack Army Medical Center, LTC (Ret.)
