Mary Frances Smith, 74, of Hot Springs, Arkansas, passed away in the early hours of January 1, 2026, determined in her characteristic way to welcome the new year one last time “with a bang.” She was born on January 30, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Russellville, Arkansas, and was always proud to say she was born in Yell County.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Lifes Lee and Euna Louann Ramsey-Wigley; and her siblings, Betty Jo Owens-Smith, John Martin, Roy Wigley, and Carroll Martin. In her younger years, she worked as a caregiver at Ouachita Memorial Hospital before continuing her calling by providing in-home care, tending to others with compassion and dedication.
In later years, her greatest joy came from her role as a grandmother and great-grandmother. She was known for being sassy, stubborn, and utterly hilarious, and her quick wit and comedic spirit brought smiles and laughter to all who knew her.
Mary is survived by her children, Michael (Talena) Smith and Becky (Jerry) Ostrom. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Ta-Gjiyonna, Ty, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Jeremiah, Josh, Brandon, and Jordan; and twenty great-grandchildren, including one she affectionately called “her baby,” Tahlia Rose DeLoch. Additional survivors include her siblings, Paula (Coy) Damon, Jim (Trecie) Wigley, and Sharon (Clay) Black; and sisters-in-law, Claralene Wigley, Diane Martin, Linda Martin, & Leslie Anne Wiggins, and a host of nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held on January 30, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., at the home of her daughter in Hot Springs, AR. Please contact family for additional information.
In honor of Mary, the family asks that guests dress casually and come prepared to share their “funniest” and favorite memories, remembering her trademark spirit of “lays & lemon drops.”
In lieu of flowers, donations to assist with Mary’s final expenses are welcomed.
