May 19, 1987 – November 29, 2025
With heavy hearts and profound sorrow, we announce the passing of Joey Jamal Ray, who gently left this world on November 29, 2025. Born on May 19, 1987, to Ethel Mae Johnson Ray and Joseph Ray, Joey was a bright and joyful soul whose presence brought light, laughter, and warmth to everyone he encountered.
Joey lived each day with intention and unmistakable charm. He was always impeccably dressed, whether rolling out to greet the morning or preparing to settle in for the night. The care for him reflected the dignity and pride his mother and brother aspired for him, and those who knew him loved this about him.
Joey found beauty in the simple, meaningful moments of life. He cherished long rides, where the world felt open and peaceful. He loved sharing his music, filling any room with melody, rhythm, and joy. Some of his most treasured moments were spent praying and worshipping with his Aunt Alice, where his spirit felt closest to God. And to those who loved him dearly, his sweet, familiar question—“What you doing?”—will forever echo lovingly in their hearts.
Joey leaves behind his devoted mother, Ethel Mae Johnson Ray, and his loyal older brother, Joseph Jabbar Ray, who both loved him deeply. He is also survived by his aunts and uncles—Ida Hawkins, Alice J. Williams, Ethel Lee Banks (Andrew), Patricia Ray Gaither, Lynwood Johnson, Troy Johnson (Velvet), and Warren Johnson (Carla Faye) James Ray (Mary), Leonard Ray III (Gwendolyn), Sylvester Ray, Clarence Ray Sr. (Karen), Edward Ray Sr., Charles Ray Sr. (Lynette)—along with a host of cousins who cherished him.
He is preceded in death by his beloved father, Joseph Ray; grandparents Jeanette Scott Johnson, Jessie Johnson Sr., Mildred Brown Ray, and Leonard Ray Jr.; and aunts and uncles Raymond Johnson, Johnny Johnson, Jessie Johnson Jr., David Ray, Mary Ann Ray, and Dianne Ray.
A proud 2007 graduate of H. L. Bourgeois High School, Joey’s love for music was the soundtrack of his life. Whether he was sitting at his keyboard, dancing with joy, singing with all his heart, or simply playing the melodies he loved, Joey had a gift for lifting the spirits of everyone around him. His smile—bright, genuine, and unforgettable—could light up even the heaviest of days.
Joey was the heartbeat of every gathering, the spark that made ordinary moments feel extraordinary. His laughter, his energy, and his loving spirit created memories that will continue to warm the hearts of those who knew him.
Joey’s memory will remain forever etched in the hearts of his family and friends. His presence was a blessing, and his absence leaves an ache that can only be softened by the love he shared so freely. He will be deeply, eternally missed.
A memorial service to honor Joey will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2025 at 4:00 PM in the chapel of Jones Funeral Home, 230 S. Hollywood Rd. Houma, LA.
