Mr. Nolan “Bug” Harris, Jr., the eldest of four children, was born on November 27, 1941, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to the late Nolan Harris, Sr. and Rosalie Smith Harris. He was raised in the community of Smithridge, now known as Chauvin, Louisiana. Nolan peacefully departed this life on December 20, 2025, at Honeysuckle Place in Covington, Louisiana.
Nolan met and married Susanne Mitchell, the love of his life, and they were joined in holy matrimony on August 14, 1965. From this union, twin sons were born: Chris Michael Harris and Craig Mitchell Harris.
Nolan began his education at Smithridge Elementary School before graduating from Southdown High School in Houma, Louisiana. His love and talent for music earned him a
scholarship to Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he enrolled in 1959.
While attending Southern University, Nolan participated in both the marching and concert bands and earned a Bachelor of Science in Music Education in 1964. He later obtained a Master’s
Degree in Educational Administration from Southern University and completed an additional 30+ graduate hours at Louisiana State University.
Following the completion of his bachelor’s degree, Nolan began his teaching career at T. A. Levy High School in Rosedale, Louisiana. He later returned to Terrebonne Parish, where he taught music at St. Joseph Catholic School in Chauvin, Louisiana. Nolan subsequently joined the Terrebonne Parish School Board, directing and teaching music throughout the parish.His career in education continued to flourish as he served as Assistant Principal at both Houma Junior High School and Terrebonne High School in Houma, Louisiana. Nolan later accepted the position of Principal at H. L. Bourgeois High School in Gray, Louisiana, where he served with dedication until his retirement in 1996.
Early in life, Nolan professed his hope in Christ while attending Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Smithridge and was baptized by the late Reverend Freddie Moses. After relocating to Gray, Louisiana, he united with Beacon Light Baptist Church, where he became a devoted and faithful member. Nolan dearly loved his pastor, his church family, and attending worship services and Bible study. He remained a faithful member until his illness.
Memorial Service will be held at 11am Saturday January 3rd 2026 at Jones Funeral Home 230 South Hollywood Road to celebrate his Life, Love and Legacy.
Nolan leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 60 years, Susanne Mitchell Harris; his twin sons, Chris Michael Harris (Ethel) and Craig Mitchell Harris; his grandchildren, Ethan (Olivia), Quinn, Caitlyn, and Craig Harris II (Taina); and his great-grandchildren, Leandro and Ilan.
He is also survived by one sister, Leaudrey Harris; two brothers, Alfred Harris and
Gerald Harris; one aunt, Ann Marie Harris; one uncle, Wayne Harris (Sharon); and a host of in-laws, relatives, and friends.
Nolan was preceded in death by his parents, Nolan Harris, Sr. and Rosalie Smith Harris; his paternal grandparents, David Smith and Martha Ann Williams Smith; his maternal grandparents, Junius Harris and Albertha Coleman Harris; his paternal great grandparents, James Harris and Mary Ann Nash Harris; and a host of aunts and uncles
