Ada Shirley McCarthy of Bellaire, TX, known to all as Shirley, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2025, at the age of 89. True to her nature, she lived—and left—on her own terms, with dignity, strength, and love.
Born on November 17, 1935, in Hull, England, Shirley was one of a kind—smart, direct, competitive, athletic, and deeply loving. From an early age, she possessed an adventurous spirit and a determination to live life to the fullest. At just 18, she packed her bags, boarded the Queen Mary, and set sail for the United States, chasing her dream of living in New York City. In the vibrant energy of 1950s Manhattan, Shirley thrived—from the glittering lights of Broadway to the fast-paced streets of the city she had always dreamed of.
At 23, she met the love of her life, James “Mac” McCarthy. Together, they built a life full of love, laughter, and family, sharing forty-six devoted years of marriage.
Shirley never slowed down. She had to achieve something each day—whether it was sharpening her mind with crosswords and trivia, maintaining her physical stamina, or simply keeping things in motion. She found great joy in reading, finishing four to five books each week. It was a passion that nourished her sharp mind and curious spirit. She worked diligently to stay sharp and active, playing competitive league tennis well into her 80s, walking two to three miles a day, and regularly challenging family and friends to card games, Scrabble, and Words with Friends (often juggling ten games at once). Time with Shirley always meant fun, wit, and just the right amount of challenge.
She also loved to travel—but nothing brought her more happiness than being surrounded by her family.
Shirley is preceded in death by her beloved husband, James “Mac” McCarthy; her parents, Harold and Gladys Gill; and her cherished grandson, Max Patterson.
She is survived by her children: Kevin Gill McCarthy and his wife Elizabeth, Mary Frances Patterson and her husband Kendell, and James Robert McCarthy. She also leaves behind her grandchildren: Jared Brooks Patterson and his wife Christa, Ariana McCarthy, Alexa McCarthy, and Amanda Garza and her husband David Rendon. Shirley was also blessed with extended family and dear friends who cherished her deeply.
Shirley lived with purpose, grace, and an unmatched strength that inspired everyone who knew her. Her legacy is one of courage, resilience, and love—and it will live on through the family and friends whose lives she so deeply touched.
The family will hold a celebration of life on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Christie’s Seafood, 6029 Westheimer Rd., Houston, TX 77057. All are welcome to join the family in honoring her remarkable life.
