Adriana O. Lira, age 85, passed away surrounded by her family on Sunday, February 7, 2021. She was born on July 1, 1935, in Houston, Texas to Catarino and Maria DeLaLuz Martinez. Although she only had a 6th grade education, that didn’t stop her from working hard. This was seen through her work with Bama Jelly Manufacturing Co. and Jeff Davis Hospitals Laundry Department. It was during this time she met her soon to be husband, Jesus Sosa Lira, Sr., by buying sweet bread at Aleman Bakery. She would only know Jesus for a few months before he asked for her hand in marriage. They were married on October 6, 1957, and would later have their first child, Blanca Estela Lira Garza, less than a year after their marriage. Adriana would only have Jesus for 6 loving years before he had an untimely death, but that was not before leaving behind a 6-month bundle of joy Jesus Sosa Lira, Jr. Having become a widow at the age of 28, she stayed loyal and never remarried. This death is ultimately what led her to make family such a big part of her life.
She would spend the rest of her life being surrounded by loved ones and being a big part of their lives having to play both mother and father for her kids was one of the hardest tasks she had taken on. Although now, in her death, she has been able to touch the lives of so many individuals from her kids, cousins, and aunts and uncles, to friends and even strangers. She loved everyone and their difference that made them unique. She was an active listener and guide to those when they needed it the most. She was fortunate to have seen her grandchildren grow up and have great-grandchildren. We have been blessed in these last few months to have enjoyed her presence that much longer. She will be deeply missed by her friends, family, and community.
Adriana is preceded in death by her parents, her late husband, Jesus S. Lira, Sr., brother, Daniel S. Martinez.
Adriana is survived by her sisters: Obdulia Guerra and Irma V. Martinez; her daughter Blanca Estela Lira Garza and husband Macario B. Garza, Jr. and her son Jesus Sosa Lira, Jr., and his wife Merima B.
