

Alice Catherine “Cathy” (Hughes) Stanton passed away peacefully, from natural causes, at the University Place Nursing Center in Houston, TX on November 29, 2013.
Cathy was born at home in Trenton, NJ on September 15, 1926, the first daughter of James Thomas and Alice Grauer Hughes. She graduated from Cathedral High School in 1944 as the Salutatorian in Commercial Studies. She went on to graduate from Rider College in 1947 with a business degree and worked in the local banking industry. Cathy worked for Beacon Finance before marrying her husband of 60 years, Dr. James P. Stanton, on June 26, 1954, and subsequently moving to Boston to pursue his medical career.
In her nearly 25 years there, Cathy was active in philanthropy, serving as president of the Tufts Medical Faculty Wives among many leadership roles .She fully enjoyed the city’s cultural treasures, including the Boston Symphony and the Opera Company of Boston, while raising three sons and two daughters. She shared her passion for these humanities with her children and worked to inspire a deep appreciation of life’s truly beautiful things.
The family moved to Houston, Texas in 1978, where she worked in the retail industry until 1986. Afterward, she continued using her business acumen to assist in the management of Dr. Stanton’s medical practice until their full retirement in 2002. She was a member of the St. John Vianney Catholic Parish and enjoyed her growing grandchildren, as well as reading modern literature and following the Houston sports scene, particularly the Houston Astros baseball club.
Cathy is predeceased by her parents, James and Alice Hughes, sister Anne Brenna, and grandson Peter William Stanton.
She is survived by her husband James of Houston, children David Stanton and wife Lisa of Newport Beach, CA, Carol Ann Stanton Meier of Princeton, NJ, Mark Stanton and wife Susan of Chapel Hill, NC, Barry Stanton of Birmingham, AL, and Joan Hendrix and husband Hammond of Austin, TX. Nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren
