Alice G. Vega of Houston, Texas was born on December 17, 1940, in Villa Mainero, Tamaulipas, Mexico to Raymundo Gonzalez and Virginia Corona. Alice was the eldest daughter, preceded in birth by Eudoro Gonzalez, and followed by Henry, Eloy, Ida, Raymundo, and Simon.
Alice was preceded in death and welcomed heartily into Heaven by her parents, Raymundo and Virginia Gonzalez; brothers, Raymundo, Eloy, and Henry; and her beloved husband of 63 years, Paul Vega, Sr.
Alice is survived by her four children—Paul Vega, Jr., Timothy Vega, Ruth Ann Cordova, and Clara Vega Rodriguez—along with eleven grandchildren, several nephews and nieces, cousins, and great-grandchildren.
Alice graduated from Texas City High School in 1960. She very much enjoyed singing in the choir and even played tennis during her time there. She was very lively and had many friends who were so excited for the next chapter in her life. Alice, being the eldest daughter, took on many responsibilities at a young age often helping her mother with the household chores and raising her younger siblings. Alice always had everyone else’s needs in mind before her own even as a young woman. By the time she graduated, she was already engaged to the man who would hold her heart forever, Paul.
Paul and Alice met in the United Methodist Church in Galveston, Texas where Paul’s father served as senior pastor and courted until their marriage on September 18th, 1960. They loved each other fiercely and were so excited to share their lives together. During their marriage, Alice exemplified the traits of an adoring wife, doting mother and grandmother, and was the heartbeat and central force for the entire family.
Alice went above and beyond in the care and upkeep of her home and family. By the time their children were born, Alice often participated as a “Team Mom” for the football and baseball teams her sons played in. She took pride in sewing costumes and dresses for her daughters’ drill team dances and performances. Every meal was home cooked and made with all the love and patience that could only come from a heaven-sent woman like herself.
Beyond the role of wife and mother, Alice welcomed the role of grandma wholeheartedly. She was instrumental in the raising of her grandchildren often helping with school pick-ups and drop-offs. She had a soft hand but a strong presence full of grace, humility, and faith. She made every effort to attend school performances, sporting events, and always called on birthdays.
Alice enjoyed singing in the choir at every church she attended, most notably, Westbury United Methodist Church, alongside her beloved, Paul. She loved taking road trips and exploring Texas together. She loved sharing a good meal and fellowship with her family and friends. Alice was soft-spoken but adored by all those who knew her. She could light up the room with her smile and her laugh was absolutely contagious. She never missed her daytime soaps or her nighttime novellas. She made the most delicious meals—all from scratch and almost entirely from memory! She hosted numerous Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays for the family. Alice LOVED taking photos of her loved ones and would make sure to frame and hang all her precious memories throughout her home.
Alice had such a quiet strength with a steadfast love for God, often starting her mornings in prayer and mediation with The Lord. She would often read daily devotionals and scriptures throughout her journey as a Methodist women. Her faith carried her through many of life’s heartaches, but she never skipped a beat and loved her family tremendously through it all.
Alice truly had the most gentle and kind spirit that carried her through 84 years on this earth. Her family was privileged to have been loved and cared for by her and are honored by the beautiful example she set with her love and zeal for Christ. She will be missed dearly and cherished in memory by all those who knew and loved her.
