Alma was born in Edinburg, Texas on June 16th, 1954. Alma graduated from Pan American
University in 1975 with a Bachelor of Business Education. She then earned a second degree in
1976 from Pan American, her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. Alma then obtained
her Master Reading Teacher Certification. Alma had a great love for teaching and worked as a
Bilingual and ESL teacher at: Donna Elementary (1975-1979), Frost Elementary (1979-1981),
Almeda Elementary (1981-1993), Mitchell Elementary (1993-2005), and finally retired from
Mitchell Elementary in 2005 holding the position of Title I Coordinator, Master Reading
Teacher. After retirement Alma was rehired as a 4th grade Bilingual Teacher at Heights
Elementary in Texas City. She retired for a second time, to become a dedicated substitute
teacher until she retired permanently to focus on her Grandson, Brighton. Alma also
volunteered for many years with the “Delta Kappa Gamma Society International” (DKG) as a
valued member and contributor.
Alma married the love of her life, Michael Albert Bowers on December 14, 1999. They were
devoted, loving, and enjoyed traveling together. Alma came into the marriage knowing full well
that Mike had two teenage children. Alma accepted Mike’s children as her own and was the
mother that they never knew they needed. Mike and Alma had three grandchildren, who they
adored immensely. Alma was born to be a caretaker of children. Alma helped raise her
grandson, Brighton Antley. She filled her days teaching him Spanish, how to read, and how to
hold scissors. From the moment he was born, he became her entire world.
Survivors include Julie Antley, Bronson Antley, Brighton Antley, Bryan Bowers, Pearl Bowers,
Hailey Padilla, and Paige Milner. Alma’s sister and husband, Raul and Delia Aleman. Alma’s
brother and wife, Paul and Pearl Guajardo. Alma’s brother-in-law, Tony Alvarado, and many
admiring nieces and nephews.
