Benjamin Franklin Husfelt passed away on Sunday, the 4th of September 2011 at the age of 84. Ben was born in Earleville, Maryland on January 17, 1927. He was the third of six brothers and sisters, and was affectionately known as “Sam” to everyone in town. When he was seven years old his mother passed away, and the family was split. He was taken in by his schoolteacher who saw to it that he received an education, something for which he was always grateful. After graduating from Cecilton High School in 1944, he enlisted in the Navy where he served for two years during World War II. After the service, he attended the University of Maryland for two years where he was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. He then moved to Wilmington, Delaware to complete his studies at the Goldey Beacon Business School. After graduation, he briefly worked for General Motors before beginning his career at Dupont, where he worked for 35 years. It was here that he met his bride to be Phoebe Bowman. They were married six months later. After a few years they moved to Chicago, and then on to Houston in 1963, where they lived ever since. After retirement, Ben enjoyed working in his workshop, volunteering for Depelchin Children’s Center, re-uniting with his Navy buddies and spending time with his family and friends. He was a hard working man. He loved and cared for his family, was a friend to everyone he met, and we will miss his kind and gentle spirit. Ben was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Bailey Husfelt; his father; John Franklin Husfelt; his brothers Henry Husfelt and John Husfelt; and sister Violet Jones. He is survived by his sisters Jeanne Flemming and Cathee Weidenmann; and by his wife of 58 years, Phoebe Husfelt; daughter Stephanie Goulas and her husband Mark Goulas; their sons Samuel Foyles Goulas and Max Husfelt Goulas; and his daughter Margaret Husfelt. Funeral services will be held in the Memorial Oaks Funeral Home Chapel, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 12:30 pm. Interment will follow in the Memorial Oaks Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Ben Requested that donations be made to Depelchin Children’s Center, Office of Advancement, 4950 Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas 77007.
