Betty Hemus

Betty Lou Hemus, known affectionately as "Bets" to her family and friends, passed away peacefully at her home in Houston, Texas, on Thursday, the 1st of May 2025. She was 89 years old. Betty was a beacon of kindness, adventure, and generosity, touching the hearts of everyone fortunate enough to have met her.

Born on the 23rd of July 1935, in Greensboro, North Carolina, Betty’s life was marked by a deep passion for family, exploration, and giving back. Betty married Solly, the love of her life on Valentine’s Day in 1989 at S. Anderson Winery in Napa, California, and enjoyed decades of laughter, great food, wine, and adventures. Together, they moved to Houston in 1975, a city she came to cherish as home.

Betty’s life was one of bold color and meaningful moments. An intrepid traveler, she visited all seven continents and more than 100 countries, with Africa holding a special place in her heart. She returned there often, sharing its unparalleled beauty with loved ones and fostering a lifelong passion for wildlife and preservation efforts.

Betty was an entrepreneurial trailblazer. During the 1970s and 80s, she built a successful business buying and renovating homes in Houston. She poured her creativity and vision into every project, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and determination.

Her impeccable taste wasn’t limited to her wardrobe; she and Solly were passionate foodies and wine enthusiasts, often hosting vibrant gatherings filled with laughter, flavorful dishes, and cherished memories. When she wasn't entertaining, she could be found savoring a Houston sunset from her condo with a glass of wine in hand.

Betty’s love extended beyond her immediate circle to her community and the causes she championed. Known for her generosity, she and Solly poured their hearts into philanthropy, helping others wherever they could. She adored baseball and was an unwavering fan of the Houston Astros and the St. Louis Cardinals, the team her late husband played for.

She is survived by her children: daughters Mary Jacquelyn Murray and husband Wayne, Cynthia Rose Durkin and husband John, and son Robert Allen Thomas and wife Linda; grandson Adam Bradley Murray and wife Amanda Jean Murray; great grandchildren Adam Jude (AJ) Murray, Olivia Louise Murray and Owen Bradley Murray. Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Solly Hemus, and her grandson, Chance.

A celebration of her life is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 22nd of May in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. Immediately following, all are invited to join the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.

To honor her incredible spirit, we invite guests to celebrate her life by wearing bright, vibrant colors to reflect her love of life, adventure, and style.

Betty will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of sharing in her life. Rest in peace, dear Bets.
