Let’s talk about Bruno! Bruno Alfons Celina Verelst, 72 years, passed away on Monday, September 16, 2024 at MD Anderson in Houston, TX. He was survived by his wife of 40 years Susette Verelst, three daughters Sarah Jones, Cynthia Lingenfelter, and An Verelst, four grandchildren Sebastian and Balian Jones, and Bria and Bella Lingenfelter, and his sister Linda Verelst.
Born in Wilrijk, Belgium, Bruno was the son of Anna De Herdt and Arthur Verelst. Bruno’s loving parents taught him the importance of hard work and dedication, a lesson that eventually enabled him to earn the title of the American Dream. Bruno graduated from the University of Don Bosco with a degree in electrical engineering. He worked his way up at Pauwels Transformers in Mechelen, Belgium, which ultimately gave him the opportunity to manage the power plant in Washington, MO, where he resided. His accomplishments were even recognized by Missouri Governor John Ashcroft, who personally thanked Bruno for the economic impact he brought to the state.
Bruno was an avid cyclist and a fan of professional cycling to the very end. Bruno also enjoyed family vacations, hiking, and was incredibly handy. Just say the word and he could build a gazebo or finish a basement. Bruno had countless interests and talents, but his greatest love was his family. This was especially visible through the sacrifices he made for his loved ones.
Bruno made an impact everywhere he went and will be remembered by many. He was often seen walking at the speed of light, yet he always found time to stop and engage in meaningful conversations with others.
Unfortunately, Bruno died from pleural mesothelioma, three years after his diagnosis. He kept his faith and never lost sight of hope throughout this journey, which is a testament of his strong will and love for his family. Bruno’s legacy will undoubtedly live on.
