Caleb (Cal) Forbes Davis IV, of Houston, Texas, cherished husband, Dad, Grandpa, and Pipa went home on December 18, 2013, following a two-month battle with cancer. Cal was loved by many and loved many, including his wife, Carrie Spiech-Davis; her children, Daniel and Juliet Childers; Cal's children, their spouses/partners, and grandchildren (Mary Elizabeth Newberry and Paul Newberry, Sky, Ivy Rose, Robin and Joshua), (Alyson and Andrew Dunn, Jessica, Caelie and Javier Perez-Dunn, Trinity Davis, Leah, Andres, Eden, Noah, Bella and Seth); and Caleb Davis V and Julie Kutac. He is also survived by his former wife, Joyce Davis; and his father's wife, Anneliese Davis.
Cal joins those gone before him, his parents, Caleb Forbes Davis III and Cornelia Turner Davis; and his brother, Keith Garrison Davis.
Cal was born in Seattle, Washington on September 1, 1938. He graduated from Cornell University in 1961 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Recruited by Ingersoll-Rand while he was in college, he eventually joined the turbo machinery group at IR's Phillipsburg, New Jersey, facility. In 1975 he joined Litwin Engineering & Construction, Inc., and moved with his family to Houston, Texas. Some years later he joined Brown & Root. In 1987 he joined M.W. Kellogg, which morphed into Kellogg/Brown & Root, where he remained until his retirement in 2011. At KBR he earned the respect of his colleagues and was known fondly as the go-to guy for detailed technical questions regarding rotating equipment.
Cal was instrumental in passing on the gift of Cursillo from the Catholic Diocese of Allentown, Pennsylvania, to the neighboring Episcopal Diocese of Bethlehem in the early 1970s. He was active in several ministries in Houston as well, including Lord of the Streets, Beginning Experience, Spiritual Direction, as well as Cursillo. Most recently he was a member of Grace Anglican Community in Katy, Texas.
Cal modeled a steadfast faith, loyalty to family, a strong work ethic, and relentless compassion for the underdog. He loved playing Scrabble, birding, growing grapefruit, taking walks, watching sports (especially the Houston Texans) and spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. Each person who knew Cal seemed to bring out a unique aspect of him, and we were all blessed to experience the wonderful man that emerged as he loved and was loved by his wife over the course of their 4-year marriage.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 28, 2013 at 3 PM at Pat H. Foley, 1200 W. 34th Street Houston, Texas 77018. There will be a reception immediately following the service.
