

He is preceded in death by his parents and stepmother Alma Ries Schmidt, wife Beth Cryar Schmidt and second wife Marcia Thurman, daughter Sarah Ann Schmidt and grandson Brian Owens.
He is survived by his daughters, Susan Schmidt Greenwade and husband Ron, Mary Charlotte Owens and husband Steve, grandsons Chad Gomez, Kevin Owens and wife Kelly, Keelan Greenwade and Alan Greenwade and wife Duna, and great granddaughter Lyndron White.
Charles grew up in Detroit, MI where he graduated from Cranbrook Academy in Bloomfield Hills, MI. He attended Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology. Charles earned his DDS from Marquett University in Milwaukee, WI. He began practicing dentistry with the US Army and served on active duty for 4 years. He then established his dental practice in the Houston Heights, practicing for over 37 years. He sold his practice and moved to Brackettville, TX where he continued practicing dentistry in Del Rio, TX for another 7 years.
In retirement he graciously gave his time to many charitable ventures. He volunteered at the San Jose Clinic in Houston and was a long-term member and past president of the Houston Heights Lions Club. He was a member of the Rotary club and past president of the Brackettville, TX chapter. He also volunteered with Rotary International providing dental care in Mexico, Guatemala and Kenya.
Charles began his love for fishing and hunting during his youth in Michigan and carried that love to Texas. As with most hunters and fishermen, he had a great respect and love of animals and the environment. His family learned through him and his actions to respect nature and all creatures great and small. He enjoyed annual hunting trips to Colorado with many lifelong friends. While living in Port Isabel, TX he volunteered his time with the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center and the Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation facility on South Padre Island. He especially enjoyed giving his time to the animals at the Isabel Y Garcia Animal Shelter in Port Isabel, TX.

He was a man of great character with an enormous sense of humor. He enjoyed many friendships and had an ability to make a friend of anyone he encountered. The brightness of his conversation and sense of humor will be missed greatly by his family and friends.
There will be a rosary at 10 a.m. followed by the funeral mass at 11 a.m. at St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Church, 7810 Cypresswood Drive, Spring TX 77379. A private interment will be held at the Houston National Cemetery at a later date.
