

With deep love and gratitude, we celebrate the life of Ms. Cheryl Darlene Kirkland-Hunter who departed this world on February 15, 2025, at the age of 79.
A woman of grace, strength, and unwavering faith, Cheryl’s journey was marked by love, dedication, and a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A proud graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Cheryl built a distinguished career in the oil industry, excelling in various roles at General Electric and Hughes Tools before retiring from Houston Community College. Her professionalism, work ethic, and dedication earned her the admiration and respect of colleagues and peers alike.
Cheryl’s faith was the cornerstone of her life. She accepted Christ at an early age under Reverend Israel Harris White at Magnolia Missionary Baptist Church where she developed a deep and abiding love for God. Later in life, she became a faithful member of Providence Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Jerry Wade Sr. where she continued her walk in faith and service.
In Cheryl’s union with Leroy Hunter, they were blessed with a daughter, Shemelle Darlene Hunter, the joy of Cheryl’s heart. Her love for her family was boundless and she found her greatest fulfillment in nurturing, guiding, and caring for those she cherished.
A woman of many talents, Cheryl was an exceptional cook and baker, bringing people together with her delicious meals. Her creativity flourished through her ceramic art, each piece a reflection of her passion and skill. She found joy in traveling the world, embarking on cruises, and exploring exotic resorts with family and friends, and creating memories that will be cherished forever. Cheryl also had a love for dancing and was always the center of attention when she graced the dance floor with her smooth and effortless moves. Cheryl’s beautiful heart, joyful spirit, and radiant smile left an indelible mark on everyone she met. She lived with kindness, laughter, and an unshakeable faith in the goodness of those around her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie James Sr., and Lucille Kirkland; her grandmother, Mary Allen; and her sister, Rose S. Ethridge.
She leaves behind a loving and devoted family to cherish her memory:
• Daughter: Shemelle Hunter-Haggerty (Ken)
• Grandchildren: Miracle (Brandon), Keirra, and Raven
• Great-Grandchildren: Amiya, Dillon, Evan, and Trendon
• Siblings: Jessie Kirkland (Shelly), Willie Kirkland, Pastor Mary Kirkland-Spurlock (Joe), and Rachel Kirkland-Jones (Reginald)
• A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends, and loved ones
She leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and joy- a life well-lived and a soul well loved.

A visitation for Cheryl will be held Saturday, March 1, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Providence Missionary Baptist Church, 111 W. Little York Rd. Houston, TX 77076. The funeral service will immediately follow from 11:00 AM. The committal will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025 from 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM at Paradise North Cemetery 10401 W. Montgomery Rd. Houston, Texas 77088.
