With deep love and gratitude, we celebrate the life of a remarkable woman whose presence touched countless hearts. Christiana Mark Ichara was born to Samuael Adam Abiah and Demah Samuel Abiah on December 27, 1956, in the town of Ikot Udo, Ika LGA in Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria. She was married to Dr. Mark Josiah Ichara in 1973. She was also a devoted and loving mother, a passionate science teacher, and a faithful woman of God whose life reflected grace, wisdom, and compassion.
She had an amazing teaching career. She began her journey in Education by attending the American Christian College in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1977. She also attended Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana, where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Science Education in 1981.
Due to her husband’s job, she went with the family to Paris, France where she spent about three years before returning to the United States. After two years in Houston, the family went to Nigeria, where she earned her Master of Education in Curriculum Studies at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria in 1990. She was also an educator at River’s State College of Education in Nigeria. She continued her teaching career at the Southwest Preparatory School where she was recognized for her outstanding performance, productivity and dedicated service.
She later joined Houston ISD and taught 6th Science for many years at Pin Oak Middle School in Bellaire, Texas. Here she also received many accolades over the years. In the classroom, she was more than a great science teacher, she was an inspiration. With patience and enthusiasm, she made learning come alive, igniting curiosity and confidence in her students.
She believed in the potential of every child and worked tirelessly to help them discover their abilities. Many will remember her encouragement, her dedication, and the way she made them feel seen and capable.
As a mother, she was the steady foundation of her family-selfless, nurturing, and endlessly supportive. Her love was unconditional, her guidance gentle yet firm, and her home a place of comfort and encouragement. She instilled strong values, curiosity, and faith in her children, teaching them not only how to succeed in life, but how to live with integrity and kindness.
Above all, she was a woman of God. She worshipped at Braeswood Church in Houston. Her faith guided her every step and was evident in the way she loved, served, and forgave. She lived her beliefs through action, offering prayers, wisdom, and quiet strength to those around her. Her life was a testimony of trust in God, even in difficult times, and her faith brought peace and hope to many.
In 2022, she experienced aggressive health challenges which became protracted, and in the late-night hours of January 12, 2026, the Lord called her home.
May Her Soul Rest in Perfect Peace. Although she is no longer physically present with us, her legacy lives on, in the lives she shaped and the minds she inspired. She will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Mark J. Ichara, children: Eno, Mfon, Evelyn, Benson and Michael, and a granddaughter, Josie Simon; her siblings: Mrs. Ima Udom, Pastor Ernest Abiah, Mrs. Gloria Ojelabi, Kingsley Abiah, Mrs. Comfort Isibor and Ufokobong Abiah; a sister in-law, Ms. Elsie Ichara, and a host of in-laws, nephews, nieces and friends.
