Dad was born on February 18, 1945, in Houston, Texas, to Lynn and Thelma Barnette. As the second of four siblings—his older sister Vicky, younger sister Sharon, and younger brother Ronnie—Dad learned early the value of family, a principle he cherished throughout his life.
At just 17, Dad made the proud choice to join the Army, serving in Germany during the Vietnam War. As an accountant, he ensured that front-line soldiers received their paychecks, fulfilling his duties with integrity and honor. After six years of dedicated service, he returned to Houston, ready to embark on the next chapter of his life. Dad was always proud to be a Vietnam Era Veteran, and was even more proud that 2 of his children Gene and Debbie both followed in his footsteps and served respectfully in the Army and Navy.
After returning to Houston following his military service, Dad worked as a cab driver, where he would often find himself at Prince's Hamburger Joint after every shift. It was there that he fell in love with his soulmate, Jesusa, affectionately known as Susie or Marie. Their love blossomed, leading to a beautiful marriage filled with adventure, laughter, and shared dreams.
Dad later changed his career and found his calling in automotives, where he worked for over 20 years. He served as General Manager for Bass & Meineke, Pep Boys, and CarMax, honing his skills and developing a passion for the trade. He also fulfilled his dream of opening his own parts store alongside his brother Ronnie, a venture that brought him immense pride.
Together, Dad and Jesusa raised four wonderful children: Gene, Sherri, Andrea (Andie), and Debra (Debbie). Dad was deeply involved in their lives, creating cherished memories through camping trips and traveling across America to visit family.
Dad was deeply involved in his children's lives. He was an asst. Scout leader when Gene was in the Boy Scouts. He was also a beloved coach for Andie, Debbie, and Sherri’s softball team, dedicating over ten years to guiding the girls and leading them to numerous championships. He was a father figure to many on the team, especially those from single-parent homes, and his generosity often saw him treating the entire team to Astros games. Coach Dad was known for his passion for the game and his kindness, leaving a lasting impression on the young lives he touched.
His dedication to work not only provided for his family but also opened doors for travel with Marie to amazing destinations like Italy, Hawaii, and Cancun, along with a memorable cruise to Alaska. These adventures were filled with love and laughter, strengthening their bond and creating memories that would last a lifetime.
Dad was so full of life and get-up-and-go that even retirement couldn't keep him idle. He went back to work for FBISD as a school bus driver. He drove a school bus for over ten years, and while driving, he met a whole new family. He was loved by both the children he drove as well as his co-workers. He made many friends and memories.
At age 75, Dad proved that adventure had no age limit when he fulfilled a lifelong dream by jumping out of a plane for skydiving. On a whim, he called his grandson, John Michael, and together they created an unforgettable memory that day—truly a Superman moment!
As much as he was a wonderful husband and dedicated dad, he was also a fun and loving grandpa to his nine grandchildren Ashley Barnette, Rae Acciarri, Kathryn McMinn, Victoria Barnette, Joshua Barnette, Kristopher (Joey) McMinn, Isabel Barnette, John Perrone, and Nevaeh Barnette, and a proud great-grandpa to nineteen great-grandchildren. He brought joy and laughter to their lives, creating special moments that will be remembered fondly for generations to come.
Dad was not just a loving husband, dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa; he was a best friend,a Recycled Teen, one part of The Dynamic Duo, and a partner in crime. Dad was real close to his little sister and wants her to know that he leaves a part of his heart to her and her family. His kindness, strength, and sense of humor enriched our lives, leaving behind a legacy of love that will forever resonate in our hearts.
As we reflect on Dad’s life today, let us honor his spirit by living with the same love, generosity, and joy he shared with us. Though he may no longer be with us, his memory will remain in our hearts, guiding us and reminding us of the importance of family and love.
We are so happy that Dad is in Heaven alongside his loving wife, his mom and dad, best friend Sammy, his 2nd Mom Orlean, his brother Ronnie and sister Vicky, his favorite cousin JLean, and way too many others that we are sure he's bragging to about his adventures. Dad, you are loved more than you know, and you will be forever missed. Godspeed.
