

Gladys Delores Bartay Hornberger, of Houston, passed away on Monday, the 20th of May 2013, at the age of 89. She was born on the 23rd of November 1923, in Houston, to Edward George Bartay, Jr. and Hilda Virginia Vick Bartay. She was raised in Wallis, Texas from the age of five.
After graduating high school, Delores moved to Houston. She met the love of her life, Edwin Walter Hornberger, on a blind date, and they were married in 1949. They shared 58 wonderful years together, until Ed’s passing in 2008.
Delores was a strong-willed woman who knew how to get things done. She served her community by holding offices in various organizations and doing charity work. She played a key role in organizing the first Virginia Slims Women’s Tennis Tournament held at the Houston Racquet Club. Her hobbies over the years were many, including singing, sewing, gardening, interior decorating, and tennis. She also loved to paint and enjoyed flower arranging.
Preceded in death by her husband, Ed, Delores will be dearly missed by her children, William Bartay Hornberger, and Kathryn Ann Hornberger Leslie and her husband John H. Leslie; and grandchildren, Sara Jane Leslie, Rachel Leigh Leslie Powell, her husband Aaron M. Powell, and Matthew Ross Leslie, as well as many friends, especially her caregiver, Ethel Thomas.
A memorial service is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 24th of May, at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road in Houston, where The Rev. Martin J. Bastian, Senior Associate Rector for Pastoral Care, is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent Bagby Parish Hall.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family suggests that memorial contributions be directed to St. Martin's Episcopal Church's Wayside Chapel, 717 Sage Rd., Houston, TX, 77056; or to the American Red Cross, PO Box 4002018, Des Moines, IA, 50340-2018.
