It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Dennis William Warren, age 77, of Cypress, Texas, on October 11, 2024, after succumbing to complications from Alzheimer’s Disease. Dennis was born in Hereford, Texas to the late William and Agnes Warren. In 1953, the family moved to Woodward, Oklahoma. On January 17, 1970, he received a Civil Engineering degree from Oklahoma State University and obtained his Professional Engineer license on August 22, 1974.
Immediately after graduation, he moved to Houston, Texas where he had obtained employment with the Texas Highway Department (now the Texas Department of Transportation). In his long career with TxDOT, he supervised various construction projects, the most notable of which was the construction of the Fred Hartman Bridge connecting Baytown and La Porte; one of the largest and first dual superstructure cable-stayed bridges in the country. The Grand Opening was on September 27, 1995.
After completing that project, he was promoted to District Construction Engineer charged with overseeing the various road construction projects for the Houston District. In 1994, he received the Gibb Gilchrist Award presented by Texas A&M in recognition of outstanding service in highway engineering with the Texas Highway Department. At the time of his retirement in July 1998, the Associated General Contractors of America presented him with a plaque for his outstanding service to the State of Texas.
After retiring from TxDOT in July 1998, he went to work for a consulting engineering firm. In 2003, he joined the American Concrete Pavement Association and later was instrumental in organizing and becoming Director of the Texas Concrete Pavement Association. In 2007, he received the Construction Division’s Customer Service Excellence Award, recognizing his leadership and technical skill regarding materials and construction practices for concrete pavement. He and members of TCPA would travel to TxDOT districts to educate TxDOT personnel on concrete pavements. He retired from the Texas Concrete Association in 2008.
He loved sports, and particularly enjoyed playing golf and going on trips to well-known golf courses with his golfing buddies. He also enjoyed cruising, by sea or river, with his wife, family friends and TxDOT friends.
He leaves his wife of 39 years, Sylvia, and his stepson Mark Zuniga (wife Trinh Luong) and grandchildren Andrew, Matthew and Lauren Zuniga. He is also survived by his sisters Ginger (John) Lewis and Mary (Tom) Hunter and brother Don (Eniko) Warren, nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephew. Dennis will be remembered for his sense of humor, intelligence and kind nature. He was a caring and gentle husband, a patient stepdad and a doting Grandpa.
