Dorothy Marie Bauer, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt; passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2016 due to surgical complications at the age of 88 after a fall at home. Dorothy was born January 17, 1928 to Henry and Wilhelmine Mappes of Norman, Oklahoma.
On May 29, 1948, she married Louis Herbert Bauer. Together, they raised their 3 children Barbara, George, and Alan in Houston, Texas where they lived together until Louis’s death in 2005.
In life, Dorothy loved spending time with her family. She loved hosting Christmas and Easter. At Christmas, she would hide special treats for each family member in objects around the tree and would watch with delight as everyone would try and find these “prizes”. She loved playing games at every family event in order to see who could win the most quarters for prizes. She especially loved card games. She would often get together to play Bridge with a special group of friends.
For Dorothy, the yearly family reunion was a special time. When it was time to make the drive to Oklahoma, she would get everyone up and moving early in the morning as if she couldn’t wait to meet-up with her brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.
She always enjoyed cooking for her loved ones. She was always known for her pies – nobody could make a pie crust that was as good and flakey as hers. When one of her grandchildren had a birthday, she would always make them feel special by cooking whatever meal that they requested, and the type of cake that they wanted.
Everywhere she went, she was always purchasing little toys and gifts for her grandchildren. Today, there is enough toys stashed in her closets that her great-grandchildren will continue to receive birthday and Christmas gifts from Granny for many years to come.
Dorothy was pre-deceased by her husband Louis Bauer, and son George Bauer; brothers: Eddie, Martin Henry, and Earnest Mappes; Sisters: Ellanora Hansmeyer, Pauline Hartman, and Arline Smith.
Dorothy is survived by her sisters: Elsie Metzler, Wilma Stone, Mary Margaret Frazier, Nancy Bailey, and Carolyn Hurst; children: Barbara Bauer Lingenfelder and Alan Bauer; grandchildren: Travis Lingenfelder, Amber Lingenfelder Hamby, Justin Bauer, Brittany Bauer Shrader, Kaeli Bauer, Mackenzie Borman, and John Bauer; great-grandchildren: Jackson Hamby, Payton Shrader, Owen Lingenfelder, and Olivia Hamby; and numerous nephews and nieces.
A memorial and viewing will be held at the Memorial Oaks Funeral Home and Cemetery (13001 Katy Fwy, Houston, TX 77079) on Friday, July 22, 2016 from 5 – 8 PM. Funeral services are to be held Saturday, July 23, 2016 at 12:30 PM at the Memorial Oaks Funeral Home and Cemetery.
