

Dorothy Jean Vaughner Prophet affectionally known as Sue by her family, a devoted wife, cherished mother, faithful sister and an amazing aunt. She was the seventh child of eight siblings born November 14, 1937 to L.D. “Bud” and Allie Vaughner, in Pilot Point, Texas. She graduated from Fred Moore High School in 1954 and shortly thereafter moved to Houston to where she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education (1958)and her Master’s in Education (1964) from Texas Southern University.
Dorothy met and several years later married Minard Prophet Jr. of Houston Texas on January 25, 1963 and to this union a daughter was born, in May of 1968, Denene Suezette Prophet
Dorothy found and confessed Christ at a very young age, she and Minard were faithful believers and servants of Greater Jerusalem Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. W. Leo Daniels and Rev C. D. Daniels where she served in the children’s ministry teaching Sunday school, In 1997 she transitioned her membership to New Jerusalem Ministries, under Pastor Lewis Rogers where she served in the Ushers and Hospitality Ministries. For the last 8 years she has been a member of Fallbrook Church with her daughter and her family under the leadership of Pastor Michael A Pender.
Dorothy served as an elementary school educator, and Title I Coordinator for the Houston Independent School District where she retired in 2002 after 43 years of service to help care for her grandsons. She also taught English as a second language for adult learners on evenings and weekends through the Houston Community College System for 10 years.
Dorothy devoted her life to her daughter, grandchildren and her church. She was an avid basketball fan, She enjoyed sewing, all types of music, dance, traveling, and just spending quality time with family and friends
She is preceded in death by her loving husband Minard Prophet, Jr. (1990); her parents L. D. “Bud” Vaughner and Allie Jackson Vaughner; her sisters Wynona Powell, Inette Kirkpatrick, her brothers, Jackson Vaughner, George Vaughner, John Douglas Vaughner, and James Vaughner. She ascended into heaven on March 5th 2022 and leaves to honor and cherish her memory, her daughter Denene Prophet-Williams (Shuron); two grandchildren Devin Michael Prophet and Dylan Matthew Prophet; one brother Tomas T.C. Vaughner of Henderson Nevada and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbors, and lifetime friends, whom she adored; Delores Golston, Joyce Parker, and Annie Hawkins.
Dorothy will be remembered for her amazing spirit and character. She was independent, strong, authentic and gracious. She was a remarkably caring woman with a huge heart and always seemed to know exactly what to say when you needed her most. If you asked for her opinion, she was going to give you an honest and candid response despite what you may have wanted to hear.
No words could ever express what she has meant to us all and how greatly she will be missed; but her everlasting spirit will live on in us forever
