Lester was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1962, and they explored Europe together while stationed in Wildflecken, Germany.
Upon returning to the United States, Dorris pursued many entrepreneurial opportunities. She was a real estate agent, an investor, and operated businesses including Midway CB Radio shop and a construction company, Bienek Industrial Steel, but her most important role was as a wife and mother.
Dorris raised two rambunctious boys and a husband, and spoiled countless dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, hamsters, ferrets, and a rat. She was passionate about children and family. It has been said that if Dorris didn't have any kids or pets to take care of that she would bring some home, and over the years she gave many children a safe and stable home.
In her later years Dorris held the secretary position for the Sam Houston Forest Estates Lot Owner's Association, a role she was well suited for and proud to fulfill.
