Marie was born on August 24, 1929 to Anna and Ellsworth Menk in Edwardsville, Illinois. Named Edna Marie Menk at birth, she went by Marie from a young age and jokingly claimed her birth caused the Great Depression. For her first 10 years, Marie lived with her parents, sisters and brother in a modern house built by her father. To provide food for their family, her parents moved to a farm outside Edwardsville, which did not have electricity, running water or plumbing. Despite being "traumatized‟ by her rustic accommodations, Marie enjoyed life on the farm with her family, friends and pet chicken, Tootles, until its untimely death. Marie graduated from a Catholic High School where she was the fastest runner in school. Marie left the farm when she married Robert Charles Bartlett, a navy pilot who flew in the Korean War.
Marie relocated to Houston in 1969 when her husband was transferred by Shell Oil Company after living in California, Connecticut and the Netherlands. In Houston, Marie became a real estate broker, traveled and enjoyed the company of family, friends, astronauts, company executives, government officials and the people she came to know. Marie had two children, Theodore Lee Bartlett and Thomas Lee Bartlett, who married and gave Marie six grandchildren, Patrick Casey Bartlett, Erica Leigh Bartlett, Travis Zeh Bartlett, Tyler Lee Bartlett, Mathew Bartlett and Kevin Bartlett. Marie also had one great grandchild, Connor Bartlett, three nieces, Deborah Agles, Beverly Menk and Marilyn Spooner, a cousin, Marilyn Bockhorst and her closest friend Celia Gutierrez. Marie was predeceased by her husband Robert Charles Bartlett, oldest son Theodore Bartlett, grandsons Mathew and Kevin Bartlett, younger brother Ellsworth Menk and two older sisters, Elizabeth Agles and Elsie Vierrege.
Marie loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, nieces and friends, with whom she was always a part of their lives. Marie was dedicated to her grandchildren and played a major role in their upbringing. We shared the holidays together as a family, enjoyed Easter and Christmas brunches which Marie generously hosted, Sunday dinners and played cards until the age of 92, which Marie usually won. Marie had the special gift of making people know they were meaningful during her life so there would be no regrets when she passed, only our irreplaceable loss. Marie‛s qualities will live on through the lives of her family and friends who she greatly influenced.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.memorialoaksfunerals.com for the Bartlett family.
