Edmond Volmar "Papito"" Laporte-Telemaque

Edmond Laporte, known to his loved ones as "Papito," passed away on March 30, 2020, at the age of 95 in Houston, Texas.A native of Les Cayes, Haiti, he grew up in the city of Port-au-Prince, the capital.

He was one of ten children from a very unique family, formed by Edmond J. Laporte a lawyer, judge and diplomat from whom he acquired his deep fairness and his love for learning, and his mother Flavie Telemaque from whom he inherited his sensitivity and love for music and the arts.

He was initially homeschooled and later excelled at regular school. He completed his education as an agronomist at the University of Haiti and in the United States, a country he loved and admired since his youth.

After working for some years, he started the great adventure of his life when he moved to Venezuela, the country that opened its arms to him and where he developed his professional career, and which gave him his family.

He worked for private industry in the agricultural sector and in education and later he transferred to the Ministry of Agriculture where he worked for many years. In 1960 he became a naturalized Venezuelan citizen and in 1963 he met the love of his life, Nancy, who he married after a short courtship.

Throughout his life he enjoyed exercising his body and his mind: he loved sports and even in his late years he enjoyed working out, while also being an avid reader.

He was a man with an encyclopedic knowledge of history, geography, music and poetry and loved statistics. He was a true renaissance man. He had a passion for teaching, a profession that he practiced for most of his life and through which he touched hundreds or perhaps thousands of lives, transmitting not only academic knowledge but also his values of honesty, integrity and hard work.

Edmond was an avid student and during his 95 years on this earth he never stopped learning. He was a polyglot (he was fluent in French, Spanish and English) and even in his golden years he continued brushing up his Russian and German, which he taught himself. He could read music, something he learned from his mom, and played the Piano Accordion and the Electric Organ, which he regularly practiced. He was a writer of poetry, something he started doing in his early teens, and also enjoyed painting.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nancy (née Ramirez), daughters Flavie (José) and Lucienne (Henry), sons Edmundo (Susana) and Jean Paul (Nairiuska), his sister Aline, 12 grandchildren (Joseph, Sophie, Henry, Luisana, Fatima, Christopher, Andrea, Stephanie, Jean Michel, Jean Luc, Christoph and Jude), and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Edmond was a loving husband, father and grandfather and his legacy will live forever in the hearts of his family and all who knew him.

Edmond’s burial will take place at The Woodlawn Cementery on 04/01/2020.

A celebration of his life will be held at some point during the summer. Date and time will be announced at a later date.

Edmond Laporte, conocido por sus seres queridos como "Papito", falleció el 30 de marzo de 2020 a la edad de 95 años en Houston, Texas.

Nacido en Los Cayos, Haití, creció en la ciudad de Puerto Príncipe, la capital.

Fue uno de los diez hijos de una familia muy singular, formada por Edmond J. Laporte, abogado, juez y diplomático de quien adquirió su profunda imparcialidad y su amor por el aprendizaje, y su madre Flavie Telemaque de quien heredó su sensibilidad y amor por la música y las artes.

Inició su educación en su hogar y posteriormente asistió a la escuela regular, donde siempre fue un alumno sobresaliente. Completó su educación como ingeniero agrónomo en la Universidad de Haití y en los Estados Unidos, un país que amaba y admiraba profundamente desde su juventud.

Después de trabajar durante algunos años, comenzó la gran aventura de su vida cuando se mudó a Venezuela, el país que le abrió los brazos y donde desarrolló su carrera profesional, y el que le dio a su familia.

Trabajó para la industria privada en el sector agrícola y en educación, y luego se incorporó al Ministerio de Agricultura, donde trabajó durante muchos años. En 1960 se convirtió en ciudadano venezolano por naturalización y en 1963 conoció al amor de su vida, Nancy, con quien se casó después de un breve noviazgo.

A lo largo de su vida disfrutó ejercitando su cuerpo y su mente: amaba los deportes e incluso en sus años postreros disfrutaba ejercitándose, además de ser un ávido lector.

Era un hombre con un conocimiento enciclopédico de historia, geografía, música y poesía y estadísticas. Era un verdadero ‘hombre del renacimiento’. Le apasionaba la enseñanza, una profesión que practicó la mayor parte de su vida y a través de la cual tocó cientos o quizás miles de vidas, transmitiendo no solo el conocimiento académico sino también sus valores de honestidad, integridad y dedicación al trabajo.

Edmond era un estudiante ávido y durante sus 95 años en esta tierra nunca dejó de aprender. Era un políglota (hablaba con fluidez francés, español e inglés) e incluso en sus años dorados continuó repasando el ruso y alemán, que él aprendió por su cuenta. Podía leer música, algo que aprendió de su madre, y tocaba el piano-acordeón y el órgano eléctrico, que practicaba regularmente. Era escritor de poesía, algo que comenzó a hacer en su adolescencia y también le encantaba pintar.

Le sobreviven su esposa de más de 56 años, Nancy (Ramírez), sus hijas Flavie (José) y Lucienne (Henry), sus hijos Edmundo (Susana) y Jean Paul (Nairiuska), su hermana Aline, 12 nietos (Joseph, Sophie, Henry, Luisana, Fátima, Christopher, Andrea, Stephanie, Jean Michel, Jean Luc, Christoph y Jude), y muchos, sobrinos y sobrinos nietos.

Edmond fue un amoroso esposo, padre y abuelo y su legado vivirá por siempre en los corazones de su familia y de todos los que lo conocieron.

El entierro de Edmond tendrá lugar en Woodlawn Cementery, el día 1 de abril de 2020.

Una ceremonia para celebrar su vida se llevará a cabo en algún momento durante el verano. La fecha y hora se anunciarán próximamente.
