

Edwin Arnold, Jr. of Houston, Texas passed away peacefully on November 24, 2011. Edwin was born in the front room of his family home place at 3207 Austin Street on March 9, 1918, the son of Edwin and Lillie Bell Arnold. Edwin attended San Jacinto High School and graduated from Rice Institute, Class of 1939.
Edwin proudly served his country in the U.S. Naval Reserve obtaining the rank of Lieutenant. He was assigned to LST-468 in the Asiatic-Pacific theater in World War II, and participated in landing operations in New Guinea, New Britain and Leyte Island, Philippine Islands. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
Edwin met the love of his life, Margery Elaine Gunby in November 1945. They were married on August 30, 1946, and celebrated their 50-year anniversary shortly before Margie’s death in 1996. Edwin and Margie had two children, Patricia and David. Edwin was a beloved and devoted husband and father.
Edwin was an accountant with United Gas Corporation in Houston, Texas from 1946 – 1962 and with Pennzoil Corporation in Shreveport, Louisiana from 1963 – 1968. Edwin returned to Houston in 1969 with the Entex Corporation where he retired as a chief accountant in 1987.
Edwin was a proud member of American Legion Post #77 and recently celebrated 62 years of continuous service. Edwin served as Post #77’s Finance Officer for decades. He spent many a Saturday night helping conduct Post #77’s bingo games.
Edwin will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, baseball, good cigars, and a good book or puzzle and family. He loved outings to Galveston beach as a youth and to his sister’s bay house in later years. He also loved his get togethers and vacations with his daughter-in-law’s extended McMichael family, whom he also cherished.
Edwin was a life-long member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Edwin is survived by his daughter, Patricia Elaine Gengaro and husband Tony of Denver, Colorado; his son, David Edwin Arnold and wife Mazie of Houston, Texas; his treasured grandson, Anthony David Gengaro of Denver, Colorado; his sister, Gertrude Schwartz of Tiki Island, Texas, and Gertrude’s daughter, Mary Anne Kannard of Houston, Texas. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Edwin was loved and will be greatly missed. Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Sunday, November 27, 2011 at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home and graveside services will be held Monday, November 28, 2011 at 1:00 pm with the Rev. Evan McClanahan officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Evangelical Lutheran Church fire restoration fund, c/o Rev.
