Elaine (Pulliam) Fuqua passed away on Tuesday, the 24th of March 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was 89 years of age. Having lived a full life, until the past few years, when she faced dementia with the love and support of her family.
Elaine was born on the 24th of September 1936, in Clovis, New Mexico to Dewey and Nina Pulliam, and was the youngest of their five children. Her young life was spent on a small farm raised by a loving mother and siblings, after losing her father at a young age. When she was a teenager, her family moved to Amarillo, Texas where she met her husband, Luther Fuqua in high school.
Interestingly, she and Luther married during their senior year in high school; however, they did not live together but apart. After graduating from Amarillo High School, they lived in California and Hawaii while Luther served in the United States Marines. Following his service, they returned to Amarillo, where she continued studies at Amarillo Junior College while also working for Texaco.
In 1960, the couple moved to Houston where they raised two sons, Myles and Scott. She eagerly volunteered with school trips, getting her kids and others to and from practice (and made a trip or two to the Principal’s Office to save one of her, largely, guilty sons!)
Elaine was an incredible mother and wife (read: patient) with an engaging personality and superb sense of humor. Words and phrases commonly used at the mention of her name include keen wit, joyful, a great one, inspiring, beautiful, giving, loving, mischievous and the list goes on…
Elaine’s homes were always well-appointed with a blend of comfort and elegance. She enjoyed hosting spouses of Luther’s domestic and overseas business partners and developed lifelong friendships as a result. Over her years of traveling to the United Kingdom and Europe, she developed an affinity with European antiques and always managed to find (often for others) something unique and personal.
Elaine volunteered in various capacities, serving at Second Mile Ministries for a number of years. She was a long-time member of Sugar Creek Baptist Church and participated in various Bible Studies and Woman’s Groups. She enjoyed following politics, especially around election cycles. In the 1980’s, she volunteered with the Fort Bend County GOP, where she served as Treasurer.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, and her loving husband, Luther Clark Fuqua; as well as her sisters, June, Wava, and Billie; and her brother, Gene. She is survived by her sons, Myles Fuqua and his wife Andrea, and Scott Fuqua and his wife Danelle; her grandchildren, Meggan, Jacob, Cameron and Alexandria; her great grandchildren, Micah, Jemma, Noah, Hunter, Sofia, and Theo. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, James Fuqua and dear sister-in-law Fredna (with whom she enjoyed a lifelong sisterhood); along with several nieces and nephews and extended family members whom she dearly loved.
A memorial service celebrating Elaine’s life is to be conducted at ten o’clock in the morning on Thursday, the 2nd of April, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston, where Pastor Kenny Dean, Lead Pastor of Bridge Fellowship Church in Sugar Land is to officiate.
